adornment. We show if we are married, to what religion we ascribe, our personal values, the marks of our tribes- all through jewelry and fashion. And it doesn’t matter what continent we are living in or group we belong to- we all do the same thing. Whole groups of people may not do much to cover their bits, but what they do wear is used to tell a story of their ranking, their people, their tribe.
I’ve been making jewels ever since. I use elements from all over the world to create- from the Pashtun of Afghanistan, the Tuareg of Niger, the silver jewelers of Ioannina, Greece- we put them together to tell new stories. We’ve launched a YouTube channel called Adorn One World, where we travel to different parts of the globe, interview indigenous jewelers, film them in their surrounding cultures, and uncover their paths to creating. And if they will have me, we will create collections together, sell online, and a certain percentage of our proceeds will go back to the communities we featured.
Check out our Adorn One World YouTube Channel.
On March 13th, we will be starting an online Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign for our first few episodes of Adorn One World: we will be visiting the reservations of New Mexico and work with Navajo and Zuni jewelry designers. The story of how Native Americans became our country’s jewelers is absolutely fascinating- the rich history dates back hundreds of years, and is intertwined with the history of our great nation.
What’s the crux of all of this international adornment? It’s simple. We all want to feel beautiful in this world. And the more we learn about how we are the same, the easier a path to understanding and peace.
Feel beautiful.
