As summer winds down and routines begin to shift, what are some simple ways people can transition their homes for the next season without starting from scratch?
You don’t have to spend a lot of money. New pillows, a throw blanket, or adding a few warmer colors can completely change how a room feels. Sometimes the smallest changes make the biggest difference!
Trends come and go, but great design lasts. How do you create spaces that feel current while still transitioning effortlessly from one season or even one stage of life to the next?
We believe in buying quality furniture that you’ll love for years. Trends are great for pillows, rugs, and decor because those are easy to change. Your sofa is usually the biggest investment in the room, so we encourage people to choose something that will last and still look good years from now.
Looking back on your own journey, was there a defining moment when you realized this business was more than just a side project and could become your next chapter?
I think we realized this business was more than just a side hustle earlier this year when we started outgrowing our current space. We kept getting busier; customers started referring their friends and family, and eventually we realized this wasn’t just a side business anymore. We ended up having to get more warehouse space for inventory, and this month we are expanding into our new showroom, which is probably our biggest milestone yet.
Home should evolve as our lives do. How do you help clients create spaces that reflect who they are today, rather than who they were years ago?
A lot of the options we carry are modular, which allows people to add pieces or rearrange the
configuration as their space or needs change. Whether you’re moving from an apartment into a home, your family is growing, or you simply want to move your couch into a new room, most of what we sell is designed to help with that. We want people to buy furniture that’s going to work for them for years instead of something that only works today.
Transitions can be exciting, but they can also be overwhelming. What have your clients taught you about embracing change, both inside the home and in life?
Change usually feels overwhelming until you actually decide to do it. We have customers all the time who realizes, once their new furniture is in their home, that they can’t believe they waited so long.
If you could leave readers with one piece of advice about navigating life’s transitions, whether in their careers, relationships, or homes, what would it be?
Don’t be afraid to just start. If you want to change careers, start a business, or try something new, you just have to go for it. Kris and I had no experience in the furniture industry when we started, and there are still a lot of things we are learning as we grow. If you asked us a year ago if we would be here today, I probably would have said no. We are excited to continue growing and learning as we build The Couch Brothers.
One of my favorite takeaways from my conversation with Matt and Kris is that transition doesn’t always have to be dramatic. We often think change requires starting over, but sometimes it begins with something much simpler: saying yes to a new opportunity, letting go of what no longer fits, or creating a space that better reflects who we’ve become.
Listening to their journey reminded me that our homes often mirror the seasons of our lives. As full-time firefighters-paramedics and entrepreneurs, Matt and Kris have built their business by helping people embrace new chapters with confidence, while reminding us that the smallest changes can often have the greatest impact.
As we move from the carefree days of summer into new routines and fresh beginnings, I hope you’ll give yourself permission to embrace whatever transition lies ahead. Whether it’s in your home, your career, your relationships, or simply your mindset, remember that growth rarely happens all at once. It begins with one intentional step.
