Be Your Own Hero

By Shannon Rugani

Wikipedia’s definition of a hero is "a person or main character of a literary work who, in the face of danger, combats adversity through impressive feats of ingenuity, bravery or strength, often sacrificing his or her own personal concerns for some greater good". This kind of leadership and ownership is inspiring and heroes should get the respect and thanks they deserve for doing so. Yet, a hero doesn't always have to be a leader or someone who saves a damsel in distress. A hero can be your reflection in the mirror.

I think a hero is someone who is constantly growing and learning how to be a better version of themselves. Heroes are hard working, selfless and courageous with a burning desire to take care of others. How can you be a hero?

Start by eating right, exercising and living a balanced life. Maintenance and prevention will help cure illness and disease. And don’t rely on prescription drugs. They will only mask an underlying problem while it destroys your body from the inside out. My rule of thumb is to eat foods as close to their natural state as possible. The fewer ingredients the better! Take care of yourself by living a healthy lifestyle so that you don’t have to rely on others to take care of you.

Also take care of the planet by practicing small habits that make big differences. Turn off the light when you leave a room, take your own reusable bags to the grocery store, use environmentally friendly products at home, use green products while cleaning and doing laundry, etc., etc. If everyone did their part in taking care of the world, we could slow down or even reverse global warming. Remember to reduce, reuse and recycle!
