For those of you who aren’t familiar with essential oils, they can affect our emotions, add to our energy levels and contribute to our overall happiness and pleasure. By using essential oils, especially in massage, we can link these wonderful scents to the part of the brain that activates the hypothalamus. Today we’re concentrating on two popular oils that set the mood for pleasure and loving energy levels: rose and ylang ylang. Let’s delve a little deeper into these two essential oils and see why they are known to be associated with love, sensuality and self-care.
The Queen of Flowers: Rose
Rose essential oil is known as the oil of the “heart” chakra in Ayurvedic practice. The strong floral fragrance seems to elicit pleasurable and romantic feelings. It’s also a wonderful way to add to a woman’s self-care in Ayurvedic massage by stimulating a sense of self-confidence and well-being. Rose oil can be mixed with a carrier oil (examples would be almond, jojoba or grapeseed) to use as a massage oil. Again, emanating from the “heart”, rose oil will have therapeutic benefits that contribute to balancing our feelings.
Another way to use this essential oil is by adding it to a water base. Rose water has antiseptic and antibacterial properties which make it fantastic for stressed and prone-to-breakout skin. It can be easily made by adding 10-12 drops of essential oil to one cup of distilled water (along with a small amount of glycerin) in a spray bottle. Rose water spray can be spritzed on bed sheets, used as an all-over body spritzer, and as a natural sunburn remedy. I also love using dried rose petals in my facial steam regimen.
