The national media is calling it an epidemic and police claim the number of gangs shipping heroin and crack cocaine into provincial towns has doubled to 1,500. Just a few months ago Hereford experienced its first drugs related murder when a young city man was killed in a knife attack in the city centre in broad daylight. The attacker was from Birmingham. The media regularly report local drug dealers appearing in the magistrates court. Its not new, but suddenly , drugs are more easily available here. The public can play a major role in helping protect young people becoming drug addicts by passing any information about drug dealers operating in their community to the police via West Mercia Crimestoppers, an independent charity set up to combat crime.
