LIONS BOOST FOR EYE CARE
PAGE 6 • FESTIVE NEWS • DECEMBER 2014
Hereford Lions Club has
given a huge boost to the
level of care for patients at
the Victoria Eye Unit at the
County Hospital with the
gift of a £14,000 highly specialized digital camera used
to diagnose patients’ eye
problems.
Stephen Scorcher, clinical
director of the unit told Festive News the equipment was
‘the workhorse’ of the Eye
Unit which deals with some
27,000 patients a year, including 7,000 new patients
added to the list annually and
2,500 eye operations, and the
extra camera would greatly
improve the service he and
his team provide. “We could
not have wished for a more
useful Christmas present. It is
a very generous gift from the
Lions Club and I thank the
club on behalf of all our patients who will benefit in the
coming years,” he added.
Lion Mike Poole, President
of the Lions Club and who
chose the camera as his project for the year, said: “There
is increasing pressure on our
health services and anything
we can do to ease the strain
will greatly benefit those
whose eyesight is at risk. My
fellow members were delighted to be able to present
such a practical and useful
gift to the Victoria Eye Unit.”
It is dedicated to the memory of a former Lions president, Ralph Green and his
wife, Marjorie who left a substantial legacy to the Lions
Club. It is an appropriate memorial as Marjorie was a social worker caring for the
blind.

Known technically as a Slit
Lamp Exam (it creates a slit
of light onto the eyes) the
equipment allows orphthalmologists to examine behind
the eyes and make a diagnosis from the digital pictures
appearing on a commuter
screen. The breakthrough in
digital imaging for eye examinations came 15 years ago
and has made a huge impact
on the service provided by the
Victoria Eye Unit.
It is not the first time Lions
Club has helped the Eye Unit.
Back in 1988, when the unit
was based at the then Victoria

Eye Hospital in Eign Road,
and the late Reg Hughes was
president, the club came to
the rescue when the pre-digital age examination camera
broke down and patients had
to travel to Birmingham or
Cardiff. Lions bought a new
camera for £20,000. In fact,
they had donated the original
one 15 years earlier.
Major role
As an International organization, Lions play a major
role in tackling blindness in
Third World countries, a
scheme supported by the
Hereford club which gives
£500 each year to the Eye
Camp project which organizes mobile eye clinics. Much
of their work is removing
cataracts, a simple operation
here in UK, but in many
countries the cause of people
becoming blind.
If individuals or organizations this Christmas would
like to make a donation to the
Eye Unit cheques made
payable to Victoria Eye Charity Fund can be sent to The
Victoria Eye Unit. (Sister
