TRIBUTES TO TWO LIONS PAGE 10 • FESTIVE NEWS • DECEMBER 2014 During the year Hereford Lions Club lost two outstanding members of the club, both from cancer. In August John Weatherall, one of the great stalwarts of the club for over 30 years lost his year long battle against cancer. He was 64 and retired three years ago from his job as manager of electricity meter reading teams in South Wales and the Midlands. .A highly committed Lion, John, supported by his wife, Sian had served in most offices from president, secretary, fundraising chairman and had just taken on the role of welfare chairman. He was a former chairman of Hereford Young Farmers. He served as vicechairman of Governors at Riverside Primary School and was involved in the creation of the school’s new nature reserve, planting hundreds of trees himself. His sons, David and Owen, last year ran in six marathons in as many weeks and raised over £5,000 for cancer research at University Hospital, Birmingham where John underwent surgery. He was also a vice-president of Luctonians Rugby Club, were both sons played. More than 450 attended his funeral at Burghill Church, highlighting the high regard in which the community held him. John had asked for any donations in his memory to go to the Acorns Children’s Hospice and these amounted to an amazing £4,000. John Weatherall In March Reg Hughes, another long serving and committed Lion died. Reg, aged 78 was a former club president, and a retired electrical wholesale manager, He had been an active member for over three decades until ill health took its toll in the last few months. The order of service booklet at his funeral featured the Lions badge, the keys of an electric keyboard and a golf ball, symbolizing Reg’s three favourite activities. Reg was known for his beaming smile. During his year as Lions president he presented a £24,000 high-tech diagnostic camera to the old Victoria Eye Hospital In retirement he taught himself to play the electronic keyboard and was an active member of the Hereford Electronic Organ and Keyboard Club where he met Elsie Winstanley, who became his partner and they featured together in last year’s Festive News playing a duet on the keyboard.
