TRIBUTES TO TWO LIONS
PAGE 10 • FESTIVE NEWS • DECEMBER 2014
During the year Hereford Lions Club lost two outstanding
members of the club, both from cancer.
In August John Weatherall, one of the great stalwarts of
the club for over 30 years lost his year long battle against
cancer. He was 64 and retired three years ago from his job
as manager of electricity meter reading teams in South
Wales and the Midlands. .A highly committed Lion, John,
supported by his wife, Sian had served in most offices from
president, secretary, fundraising chairman and had just
taken on the role of welfare chairman. He was a former
chairman of Hereford Young Farmers. He served as vicechairman of Governors at Riverside Primary School and
was involved in the creation of the school’s new nature
reserve, planting hundreds of trees himself. His sons, David
and Owen, last year ran in six marathons in as many weeks
and raised over £5,000 for cancer research at University
Hospital, Birmingham where John underwent surgery. He
was also a vice-president of Luctonians Rugby Club, were
both sons played.
More than 450 attended his funeral at Burghill Church,
highlighting the high regard in which the community held
him.
John had asked for any donations in his memory to go to
the Acorns Children’s Hospice and these amounted to an
amazing £4,000.

In March Reg Hughes, another long serving and committed
Lion died.
Reg, aged 78 was a former club president, and a retired
electrical wholesale manager, He had been an active
member for over three decades until ill health took its toll
in the last few months. The order of service booklet at his
funeral featured the Lions badge, the keys of an electric
keyboard and a golf ball, symbolizing Reg’s three
favourite activities. Reg was known for his beaming smile.
During his year as Lions president he presented a £24,000
high-tech diagnostic camera to the old Victoria Eye
Hospital
In retirement he taught himself to play the electronic
keyboard and was an active member of the Hereford
Electronic Organ and Keyboard Club where he met Elsie
Winstanley, who became his partner and they featured
together in last year’s Festive News playing a duet on the
keyboard.
Club president Mike Poole said: “Both John and Reg had
given long and outstanding service to Lions International
and their commitment and friendship will be very much
missed by us all.”
