The decision to abandon the flower beds and city centre planters has already been taken and the beds will be left bare (or full of weeds) unless a rescue mission led by Hereford in Bloom volunteers in partnership with the City Council and BID (Business Improvement District) is successful . Hereford has won Gold in the Britain in Bloom national competition for the last three years but that status is now at risk. The Bloom group had been paying for the plants for the last two years with Balfour Beatty doing the planting. Now the rescue team is urgently seeki ng a way to fund the flower planting and keep Hereford looking bright and cheerful to visitors. The choice is flowers or concrete! The changes started with the building of the new shopping and leisure centre on the old livestock market which has already made an impact. Next will be the building of a 600 home urban village close to Old Market shops. Work will start shortly on the new link road from Edgar Street to Commercial Road by Morrisons opening up the area of the urban village project. Another link road connecting Ross Road at Grafton to the Abergaveny Road at the Clehonger junction is awaiting planning permission. At Rotherwas new factories on the Skylon Enterprise Park are rapidly going up offering the prospect of a thousand new jobs to the 2,500 already employed on the vast industrial estate. .House builders are already queuing up to turn green fields into sprawling housing estate, with 600 lined up for land at Holmer and 1,000 on land bounded by Roman Road and Kings Acre Road close to the new livestock market plus the 200 due to be built on the cider apple orchards at Hampton Bishop.. And don’t let us forget the 6,000 homes Herefordshire Council envisage on farmland between Breinton, Swainshill and Lyde to pay for the eight mile long Western by-pass which few believe will ever get built in their lifetime The long talked about Unniversity of Hereford is getting close to happening. Significantly, there are only 700 out of work in Herefordshire. Hereford could become the ‘power house’ of the region. But only if the brigade of objectors don’t Flower beds like this one on Whitecross Road will disappear if the torpedo its future. ‘Save our Flowers’ mission fails.
