FULL STEAM AHEAD

Eight old age pensioners with one thing in common – they all were
drivers in their younger days of the famous steam engine King George
V which spent its retirement days at the Bulmer Railway Centre in
Hereford.
They met up at a railway men’s reunion in the city’s Railway Club
and swopped tales of the great days of steam and when every young
lad wanted to grow up and be an engine driver. Bringing back the memories when rail engines were powered by coal not diesel was a copy
of the iconic painting of the King in the sidings at Bulmers by artist Terence Cuneo in the early 70’, which the firm sold a dozen years ago in
a London auction for £40,000. A hefty return on the £4,000 the firm
paid Cuneo for his efforts.
All but two of the rail men l still live in Hereford where the old shed
where the engines were fired up in the early hours to start a day’s work
on the tracks is now a ten pin bowling alley. The group are pictured admiring the Cuneo photograph (l to r) Peter Pritchard,, Trevor Bethel,

The locomotive 6000 arrived at Bulmers in 1968 after being restored
by the cider firm to become the star attraction of visitors tours of the
cider mill and later would be the first steam engine to return to the tracks
after British Rail’s ban on steam engines was lifted . Crowds turned
out to welcome the King, built in Swindon in 1927 and in its day held
the speed records.
The ‘old King boys’ spent the greater part of the working lives driving diesels but all agreed nothing could compare with being at the controls of a mighty steam engine. Perhaps that’s why boys today do not
grow wanting to be an engine driver.
