St Michael’s Hospice:
A place of light
and love
PAGE 44 • FESTIVE NEWS • DECEMBER 2015
The new Inpatient Unit at St Michael’s Hospice had its
official opening in March 2015 and has revolutionized
end-of-life care in Herefordshire.
Inpatients now have the comfort of private rooms
with en-suite shower and bathroom facilities. Their
friends and family can now spend time with their loved
ones in a beautiful and therapeutic building.
Without the dedication and vision of an
extraordinary group of people, St Michael’s Hospice
would not be able to provide these vital services free
of charge. It is a story of determination, perseverance,
and the very essence of Britain’s ‘can-do’ community
spirit.
Because of that ‘can-do’ attitude, the extensive
refurbishment of the original building is well underway.
When finished, it will create educational, therapeutic
and supportive environments including a new café,
chapel, meeting rooms and a quiet space. This space is
where Living Well, the Day Hospice and a breadth of support
groups for patients and carers will meet.
To celebrate all the people behind St Michael’s story, a book is
being written that will capture the life-affirming spirit of the
Hospice. The book will also include interviews with patients and
give them the chance to talk about their lives and the perspective
that they found at St Michael’s.
The idea for the book came from Rachel Haworth after the
Hospice provided care to her mother. Rachel said, 'Visiting my
mother during the final part of her life at St Michael’s was a
remarkable experience. The love and care that staff gave went
above and beyond the call of duty. Though it was a deeply sad
time, St Michael’s could not have done more. I vowed that I would
find a way to give something back. The books title, 20 Beds,
reflects the work on the new Inpatient Unit. I hope people enjoy
reading the inspiring stories and that the book will raise money to
help St Michael’s Hospice continue supporting families in need.’
20 Beds will be launched in spring 2016, and £4 from the cost
of each book will go directly to St Michael’s Hospice. The title is
a joint venture between Shrewsbury publishing house A Way With
Media Ltd and Herefordshire bookseller Hey Everyone.
