Lots of Memories as Holiday Home goes up For Sale New Lion George signs up PAGE 40 • FESTIVE NEWS • DECEMBER 2015 The latest new member of Hereford Lions Club is George Goodman, 64 and a builder. Thousands of Hereford folk will have many happy memories of their time spent as guests of Hereford Lions Club at their Holiday Home on the seafront at Burnham on Sea in Somerset. For 40 years through spring and summer groups of up to a dozen would be taken down to Burnham for a free weeks self catering holiday at the seaside. Without the help of the Lions they were unlikely to get a break and the scheme was a boom, mostly to the elderly, handicapped or families unable to afford a summer holiday. As reported on page 1 the holiday home is to be auctioned on November 25, ending four decades of providing a welcome to so many people from Hereford and nearby villages and the response from them over all those years proved just how valuable the free holiday scheme was to those needing some extra support. The Lions referred to it as the Jewell in the Crown of all the community services the club provides. But sadly, times change and running the holiday home was no longer a viable project and the club made the difficult decision to sell and invest the proceeds in its new Hereford Lions Community Support Foundation.
