Lions Roar – but they don’t bite!
Keith Wilding of Ross-on-Wye
Lions District Governor
tells Festive News what
it’s like to be a Lion
Lions may seem a strange name for an organisation that helps others – Lions in the wild are not
the most friendly of animals and seem to spend a
lot of time either hunting or sleeping! However,
Lions in your local community are rarely at rest
and often out hunting for new ways to make a
difference to those who might need a little extra
help in life.
Being a Lion is a privilege, but it is not a
‘closed’ group and the Clubs in and around Herefordshire are always keen to talk to people who
are interested in joining them. The privilege
comes from being able to join a group of likeminded people who are happy to roll their sleeves
up, to raise funds but also to help in practical
ways. From raffles to race nights, fairs to beer festivals and not forgetting being Santa’s helpers –
whatever anyone can organise that is where the
Lions get involved.
Lions Clubs International is celebrating its 100
year Anniversary in 2017. This is an amazing
milestone and it would be impossible to count
how much has been done over those 100 years to
improve the quality of life for many people. I have
been involved in Ross Lions Club for 11 years.
When I took early retirement I wanted to find a
way to ‘give something back’. Membership of
Lions gives people the chance to give something
back, to contribute to the local and worldwide
community. We can do so much more if we work
together in a team than if we try to do things on
Keith and wife Sue, also a Lion
our own. Lions’ membership can broaden your
horizons, help you to meet new people and make
new friends.
There are Lions Clubs all over world made up
of volunteers and because members pay modest
‘subs’ to run the organisation, every penny
donated by the public goes to those who need it
most. There is a huge amount of personal satisfaction that comes from knowing that. We Lions
focus on projects to promote Health, to empower
our youth, to give sight and to meet humanitarian
needs around the world. Some of what Lions do
can be seen on our websites – just search for Lions
Clubs International (www.lions105W.org.uk) and
see what you can find out about us. And if you like
what you see then get in touch and we can talk
about how you might be able to help us and make
your difference in the world.
