Each year 300 boys and girls in some of the poorest countries in the world will get one of their shoeboxes filled with treats, probably the only present they will get. For Renie (80) from Bodenham and Margaret (76) who lives in Holmer it is an year round task hunting for small toys and useful items such as soap, toothpaste and especially knitted hats, scarves and gloves from the Bodenham Knitting Group, as well as collecting empty boxes from shoe shops . But definitely no toy guns! The Venue on the Edge of Town ? ? The conservatory at Renie’s home is the ‘filling shed’ where the friends store their purchases, cover the 300 boxes in festive wrapping paper and fill them with a selection of goodies which will bring a smile to a child somewhere in the world. They are part of a national charity, Samaritans Purse supported by thousands of families who make up a shoebox. But none can beat the annual tally of Renie and Margaret who over two decades have brought the spirit and joy of Christmas into the lives of literary thousands of children. Generous Herefordshire sends over 10,000 boxes each Christmas coordinated through churches and schools.
