FEATURED ARTIST

Sam Sedlowsky

Fernie was always a family weekend destination for Sam Sedlowsky from her former homes in Edmonton and Calgary. After many years of visits, her parents expressed an interest in moving to the mountains permanently. Sam, along with her husband and son, took the leap with them, moving into a multi-generational home together around 14 years ago, with the family dog, Molly, completing the household later.
Always creative, Sam dabbled in oil painting and multi-media in the past and has worked in web and graphic design. Several years ago, she joined the Fernie Quilt Guild and took a quilting course, later hosting her first exhibition at the Arts Station.
A meticulous crafter, quilting has become a favourite passion where she bridges the gap between arts and crafts. Working from her backyard studio with a view of the Lizard Range, she stands in front of an elevated sewing machine to keep the work at eye-level. The environment has provided inspiration for her pieces, which include a series of studies of local historical buildings, topological map renderings, abstract work inspired by nature, and depictions of wildlife, including fly fishing scenes.

Highlighting her commitment to sustainability, her studio holds three generations of upcycled, thrifted, and dumpster diverted fabrics.
New works are regularly displayed and available for sale at H Squared Gallery. She enjoys working in collaboration with other artists; two new pieces produced with illustrator, Brina Schenk, will be available this fall. Coming soon to the new EVR building in Sparwood is her largest piece to date – a 44” x 38” study of a Big Horn Sheep.
When not absorbed by her art, Sam works with the Community Energy Association. In rare spare moments, she enjoys mountain biking, teaching art classes and camps, and is a director with Wapiti Music Festival and Fernie Nordic Society.
