Question: " My dog loves walking, even when it ' s ridiculously cold outside. How would I know if he gets frostbite?"
Answer: Frostbite in dogs most often affects the ears, paws, tail, and nose. Early signs can be subtle. Watch for pale, gray, or bluish skin, which may feel very cold or hard to the touch. Your dog might limp, lift a paw, or seem reluctant to walk. As frostbite progresses, the affected area can swell, blister, or become painful once rewarmed. In severe cases, the skin may turn black, indicating tissue death.
Behavioral changes are also important clues. Dogs with frostbite may whine, shiver excessively, or act lethargic. Short-haired, small, senior, or very young dogs are at higher risk.
If you suspect frostbite, gently warm the area using lukewarm( not hot) water and seek veterinary care immediately. Never rub the area, as this can cause further damage. Prevent frostbite by limiting cold exposure and using protective gear.
