After reading it, we decided to pull out the beautiful Mah Jongg set we purchased in a basket at the recent festival of the arts and challenge ourselves to learn to play. We first watched a couple of YouTube training videos. Then I used the search feature of the CCC Calendar and found that there is a group of residents who play Mah Jongg each Monday at 1 p. m. in the Activity Center. We showed up and found they are a welcoming group to newbies. Lindy Anderson and Amy Day were wonderful teachers and helped us learn how to play. to stop Soviet tanks, it was more of a suicide mission than a defense strategy. Thousands were deployed over Europe and Asia before the Army quietly phased them out. It was the ultimate symbol of Cold War paranoia.
Keith talked about getting a call one night from Sandia security and the local police asking for help in talking a physicist off the roof and preventing his suicide attempt. The man was struggling with the moral issue of why am I helping to build these systems.
Keith Weir has seen a lot in his 93
years. Many Charbonneau residents may have seen him driving his oneof-a-kind royal blue golf cart around the community. He saw it at Costco a couple years back, one of those impulse buys— $ 8,400, what a deal. He loved touring the neighborhoods, but not so much the charging and the upkeep, so he donated the cart to our
Charbonneau Country Club office. It is parked on the front right-hand side of the Activity Center. When you see it, or see one of the staff driving around, think of your local neighbor Keith Weir, a man behind the scenes of some of the most top-secret weapon production operations in this country during the post Oppenheimer era.
