Description : This breed ' s weather-resistant outer coat is short and straight , with a dense undercoat . His coloring is blue or red speckle . Blue includes black , blue , or tan markings . Red speckle means red all over , including the undercoat .
Temperament : Australian Cattle Dogs are very intelligent , active , and highly devoted to their owners . They thrive on having a job to do and taking part in daily activities . Very loyal and protective of their people , they make excellent watchdogs . They can be great family dogs , but need owners who understand their particular needs . This independent breed can be a challenge to raise and live with - you must be a leader yourself . ACDs tend to be wary of outsiders , and can be willful and stubborn at times . They can also be destructive when bored , and tend to chew - a lot . Because they were bred to herd and chase , that ' s what they do - herd and chase just about anything , including cars . Consistent and positive training , as well as constant physical and mental activity , is suggested . Like all dogs , they need early socialization , and exposure to different people , sights , sounds , and experiences . They are best suited to an environment where they get plenty of physical and mental stimulation to provide an outlet for their natural energy and bright mind .
Average Height / Weight : Cattle Dogs stand between 17 - 20 inches tall , and their weight ranges from 30 - 50 pounds .
Health Issues : This breed is generally healthy , but can be prone to Progressive Retinal Atrophy , Hip Dysplasia , and Deafness .
Exercise : These dogs love challenges associated with sports . Frequent walks and other vigorous exercise , such as running or hiking , is a necessity . Australian Cattle Dogs thrive in activities such as agility , obedience , rally , flyball , and flying disc competitions . A fenced-in yard is a plus .
Life Expectancy : 12 - 15 years .
Grooming : These dogs don ' t shed year-round , but " blow " their coat once or twice a year and shed in clumps . Brushing once a week when he is not shedding is sufficient .
