January 2023 ASCE-NH Section Lunch & Learn Webinar The Importance of Monitoring & Remote Data Collection
The 2023 ASCE New Hampshire Section Monthly Lunch & Learns started with a presentation by Mr . Raphael Victor . Mr . Victor is a geotechnical engineer with a background in instrumentation and monitoring of infrastructure . He is currently working with Senceive , a wireless sensor manufacturer highly focused on continuously improving monitoring technology and providing high-quality data on the structural and geotechnical condition of assets . ASCE and its members were delighted to hear from him regarding the state-of-the-art monitoring he has been conducting over the last 14 years .
The presentation started with a background on instrumentation and monitoring concepts and how they have evolved with technology advancements and regulatory requirements . It was important to understand the different reasons we monitor to prevent risk , optimize schedules , provide safe work environments , and protect the public . Monitoring is conducted through visual inspections , mechanical instrumentation , and remote sensing methods . Each method has its benefit depending on the job size and complexity . Specifically , remote sensing methods have allowed the industry to monitor infrastructure through cloud devices that can prepare data and alerts on your phone or computer without the need to be on site . The real-time data decreases boots on the ground , increases safety , and can provide trend data for maintenance optimization .
Mr . Victor has used this technology and applied it to a series of real-world applications such as railroad track geometry , slope stability , and tunnel convergence / divergence . Site conditions play a major role in sensor setup and method . Mr . Victor explained the benefits of this data to determine future improvements based on trend data , immediate response in case of emergency repairs , and the ability to prevent disastrous safety situations . In conclusion , technology makes our life easier and safer . Therefore , we should not be scared to harness it and apply it to our field .
Thank you to Raphael Victor , for your time and effort to make the webinar a success for our members . It is remarkable how our industry has been able to advance with the improvements in technology . Attendees received 1.0 PDH and should see their names on a subsequent page for their records . Please look for more Webinar opportunities from the ASCE-NH Section in the coming months .
