Year ’ s first hole-in-one
Congratulations to Al Landis for his Dec . 18 hole-in-one on Yellow 5 . This is the Men ’ s Club ’ s first reported hole-inone for the our year , which runs from Nov . 1 , 2021 to Oct . 31 , 2022 . This is Al ’ s second hole-in-one in the last three years !
Don ’ t forget , all Men ’ s Club members are eligible to share in the Hole-One- Prize pool if they make a hole-in-one at Charbonneau that is witnessed by another player .

Help children learn to love themselves
In the year 1842 a painter by the name of Ingres started a portrait of the Comptesse De Broglie . This comptesse was about 19 at the time . She was
WIESENTHAL wealthy and very beautiful even though she always thought of herself as useless and ugly . Why ? Because that ’ s what her mother had always told her . How do we know this ? She wrote an autobiography .
When children are told they are ugly and worthless that ’ s what they grow up thinking .
This mistreatment of children has spanned the years . In the Portland area we have many children growing up being told through verbal and physical abuse that
they are worthless . These children believe it because that ’ s what they are told when they ’ re young . When a child thinks of himself or herself as worthless it makes them angry . The anger turns them into children who act out and abuse others . They throw things , have temper-tantrums , even after the 2-year-old stage , and grow up not liking themselves or others . If a person doesn ’ t like himself or herself it ’ s hard to like another person or to treat them with respect .
The Boys & Girls Aid Organization of Portland , along with the help of the Charbonneau Cypress branch , is setting up a house for children like this . We went into the house in the fall and cleaned it up . Now we , along with others , are providing the equipment and furnishings needed . This house is called “ The Cypress House .” Our goal is to make the house itself and the counselors in it say to the children “ You are important and we like you .”
The children who come to this house are the fortunate ones among the abused children in the Portland area . They will live there until they can go to the regular family that they have always wanted and one that treats them with love and respect . Is this easy to do ? Of course not ! This process takes time , resources and energy .

The comptesse in the 1842 painting probably never did get over her feelings of being worthless but the children we serve will . They will grow into adults who can raise families and help other people who have been abused as they had been . Is it possible ? Yes !
With LOVE this happens on a regular basis at Boys & Girls Aid .
