Spring is around the corner !
Hello Wilsonville library fans ,
Welcome to February ! February is called the gateway to spring , so if you ’ ve been pining away for warmer weather , please don ’ t worry ! The library ’ s offerings this
MARTIN month ( and beyond ) should
keep your attention off the seasonal cold until the much-anticipated arrival of the spring !
For adults :
Have you already joined our all-ages Winter Reading Challenge ? Good news — you still can ! Complete the bingo challenge and get entered into a fun prize drawing . The fun already began on Jan . 2 , but you can turn in entries all the way up until Feb . 29 . Pick up a bingo game board at the library or download one on our website . If you have any questions , please call us at 503-682-2744 or come visit us at the circulation desk .
Also here all February long is the return of a favorite activity : Display your artistic talents in our Tiny Art Show ! Starting Feb . 1 , pick up a mini art kit here at the library ( while supplies last ) and create your masterpiece . When completed , return it to us by Feb . 25 to take part in the March show . Mini art kits are not a prerequisite — any submissions that meet the Tiny Art Show requirements ( 3 ” x3 ” canvas , family-friendly theme ) are welcome . Just make sure to turn your masterpiece ( with entry form and label on the back of the artwork ) in to the library by Feb . 25 .
Our fantabulous First Friday Films matinee continues on Friday , Feb . 2 at 3 p . m . February ’ s film is “ The Miracle Club .” The women of Ballygar have a dream to taste freedom and win a pilgrimage to the sacred French town of Lourdes . The film stars Maggie Smith , Laura Linney and Kathy Bates . Please join us for this no-cost film , with snacks , popcorn and now … even padded chairs ! No reservations necessary — just show up !
On Saturday , Feb . 3 , please attend our free Space Talk : NASA ’ s Amazing Mission to the Asteroid Belt . NASA ’ s innovative DAWN spacecraft studied the conditions and processes of the solar system ’ s earliest epoch by investigating in detail two of the largest ( and still intact ) protoplanets in the asteroid belt : the giant asteroid Vesta and dwarf planet Ceres . These two worlds have followed very different evolutionary paths . Using exceptionally efficient electric ion propulsion , DAWN became the first and only spacecraft to orbit two different deep space bodies on the same mission . Come see incredible photos of these two worlds , what it took for us to get there and what we ’ ve learned ! Presented by two
experienced docents from the Evergreen Air and Space Museum .
Every Tuesday in February ( the 6th , 13th , 20th and 27th ) you can meet with a representative from ODHS ( the Oregon Department of Human Services ), who may be able to help you with housing or other social service matters . The representative will be at the library from 10 a . m . to 12 p . m ., and again after lunch , from 1-3 p . m . No appointments or signups are needed , but please do give us a call on the day , just to double check that the ODHS folks are available .
Also on Mondays and Tuesdays in February , feel free to join us for free informal English classes at the library . We have both a beginning ESL ( from 11 a . m . to 12:30 p . m . on Mondays , the 5th , 12th and 26th [ no class on the 19th , because we ’ re closed for the holiday ]), and an intermediate ESL class ( from 10:30 a . m . to 12 p . m . on Tuesdays the 6th , 13th , 20th and 27th ). These are English as a Second Language classes , but anyone who would like to improve their English skills may attend . No sign-up necessary — just drop in !
Our fun PROFILES lectures will continue on Wednesday , Feb . 7 at 11 a . m . Taught by emeritus Professor Bill Thierfelder , this program recounts the life of Frederick Douglass , a truly extraordinary man who escaped the bonds of servitude , taught himself to read , write and speak with eloquence . Douglass composed one of the most famous autobiographies of the 19th century and put his life on the line to help others overcome the horrors of slavery . He is still an inspiration to millions with his forthright honesty and determination . Sign up to receive the Zoom meeting code , but act quickly ! www . wilsonvillelibrary . org / classes .
On Saturday , Feb . 10 from 2-3 p . m ., the library will fill with the sonorous notes of the ever-popular BookNotes Concert Series ! This time , musician Natalie Mann will sing classic and contemporary songs of love in her lilting and luscious soprano . Free and open to all !
On both Saturday , Feb . 10 ( from noon until 2 p . m .), and also on Tuesday , Feb . 13 ( from 10 a . m . to noon ), please help us celebrate the Wilsonville Imagination Library ’ s 12th anniversary ! Did you know that the Wilsonville Imagination Library partners with the Dolly Parton ’ s Imagination Library to gift books to Wilsonville children from birth until their fifth birthday ? The Imagination Library program mails a high quality , age-appropriate book to each child once a month at no cost to the parents . The books are theirs to keep ! At these special events in February , you can create your own thank you notes to Dolly Parton , visit the photo booth , enjoy other activities and scarf some cake ! We thank Wilsonville Subaru for generously providing all materials and refreshments .
On Thursday , Feb . 15 , how about joining us for a refreshing walk in the snowy (?) weather ? Our tony , high-class Walking Book Club departs from the library and journeys all the way to the deepest recesses of Memorial Park ! During the walk we ’ ll talk about this month ’ s book : “ Remarkably Bright Creatures ”
