I ’ m glad I ’ m not a snowbird !

I have a beautiful glass hummingbird feeder set up outside my kitchen window , which I enjoy watching even though I get only one or two sightings a day . There seems to be a pattern to their eating routine , as I watch them fly

FERGUSON in , look around then land on the feeder where they enjoy a meal before taking off again . I don ’ t know whether some hummingbirds migrate to other , warmer parts of the country and return in the spring , but they sure miss out on enjoying my delicious sugar water in my cat-free yard .

I feel the same way about another species of bird , the Charbonneau snowbird . Most of them fly ( or drive ) south at the first sign of the cooler weather in October and don ’ t return until late spring . How sad , because as a year-round resident of Charbonneau , I see and enjoy a lot that the snowbirds miss out on . They don ’ t get to enjoy a walk on the red course , without lugging along a bag full of golf clubs . Or how about enjoying the quiet winter days when the leaf blowing has stopped , at least for a month or so . And of course there is the pitter patter of raindrops , catching you by surprise while out on a walk , or pouring down on a dark afternoon , giving you the perfect excuse to watch a movie in front of a blazing fire , from under a warm throw , while clutching a bowl of popcorn . I ’ m in heaven spending the winter in Oregon !!

Snowbirds miss out on some pretty neat things around here . Like Fourth Friday at Five . They don ’ t even know what that is ! Or delicious Lux pastries and sandwiches served with coffee any way you like it . The new , bigger and better Lux Sucre Desserts continues to burst at the seams , all day long , with happy Charbonneau year rounders . Snowbirds will also miss out on attending The Dinner ( formerly called the Crab & Rib Dinner ) put on by Boys & Girls Aid and scheduled for March 16 this year .

And how about NO SALES TAX ! I love that !! We can shop to our hearts content in our fairly empty stores . In California , where I lived for 40-plus years , the lines at checkout stands and gas stations were long and miserable all year long , especially in the winter because of all the visiting snowbirds !

But the most important thing the snowbirds miss out on by leaving rainy , cloudy Charbonneau , is the gift of an occasional warm , sunny day . I do treasure those days . Don ’ t you ?

a heart attack can develop slow enough that you ’ re not aware you ’ re having a medical emergency . A heart attack occurs when the blood flow that brings oxygen to the heart muscle is severely reduced or cut off completely . Symptoms typically include : � Chest discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts for more than a few minutes or goes away and returns . It can feel like uncomfortable pressure , squeezing , fullness or pain .

� Upper body discomfort , such as pain or discomfort in one or both arms , the back , neck , jaw or stomach .

� Shortness of breath before , during , or after other discomforts .

� Other signs , including breaking out in a cold sweat , nausea or lightheadedness .

The most common heart attack symptom for women and men is chest pain or discomfort . However , women are more likely to experience other symptoms , particularly shortness of breath , nausea or vomiting , back or jaw pain , pressure in the lower chest or upper abdomen , dizziness , fainting or extreme fatigue .

The heart is a muscle . It can deteriorate with each passing minute you delay medical treatment . Don ’ t ignore your symptoms , and don ’ t drive yourself to the hospital .

Firefighters often hear heart attack patients say , “ I wasn ’ t sure it was a heart attack ,” or “ I didn ’ t want to bother anyone .”

A heart attack can cause sudden cardiac arrest when the heart malfunctions and stops beating unexpectedly . Sudden cardiac arrest leads to death when the heart stops working properly . This can be reversed if CPR is performed and a defibrillator is used to shock the heart and restore a normal heart rhythm .

Studies show that CPR can double or triple a cardiac arrest patient ’ s chance of survival .
