Story and Photo by Fred Kopf
A Lynbrook family, unaware
that the attic of their home was
on fire, was roused from their
dinner table by three firefighters who noticed smoke coming
from the roof on Sunday, February 14th. At approximately
5:00pm, two members of the
Lynbrook Fire Department and
one member of the Hewlett
Fire Department were in their
personal vehicles stopped at
the intersection of Scranton
Avenue and Broadway when
they noticed black smoke pouring from the attic of a home
at 354 Scranton Avenue. All
three rushed to the home and
pounded on the front door
to alert the family of five who
had just sat down to dinner on
the first floor. Nassau’s Bravest
quickly escorted the occupants,
including two dogs, out into
the zero-degree weather and
turned in the alarm to the Lynbrook Fire Department. So as
many members were preparing
their own dinners to celebrate
Valentine’s Day, pagers alerted
them to a possible house fire.
Responding units reported a
heavy column of smoke showing and the transmission of a
Signal 10 quickly followed. Mutual aid was
