Aggressive Attack on Smoky Fire

On Tuesday , September 6th , the Brentwood Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire at 1 Merion Road off Washington Avenue at the northern end of the Brentwood Fire District . Chief Bill Peterson [ 3-2-30 ] arrived to find smoke coming from a single-story private dwelling and requested the alarm to be reactivated as a Signal 13 / 35 [ working fire ] which brought mutual aid from the Commack Fire Department for a FAST , the East Brentwood Fire Department for an engine , and the Bay Shore Fire Department for standby . Handlines were stretched and a vigorous attack was made on the fire . Searches turned up negative and overhaul began . The fire was placed under control shortly after . There were no reported injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation .

MASTIC BEACH

Pedestrian Struck , Medevac Responds

On September 7th , at about 4:35pm , the Mastic Beach Fire Department was activated for a vehicle versus pedestrian on Huntington Drive . On arrival , Chief Carlo Grover advised that police were requesting a landing zone be set up for a helicopter . Unit 5-13-9 and Fire Police responded to St . Jude Church to secure the location for the Medevac . Chief Grover and members from Rescue 4 made their way to the landing zone [ after confirming they were no longer needed at the accident scene ] where they assisted with securing the area and standing by in case they were needed . Mastic Beach Ambulance transported the patient to the helicopter where she was evaluated by a flight medic and then airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital .

YAPHANK

Alleged Wrong-Way Driver

At approximately 10:00pm on Friday , September 9th , authorities were notified of an accident on County Road 101 [ Patchogue / Yaphank Road ] which occurred under the overpass of the Long Island Expressway . The woman , believed to be driving her Honda Civic southbound in the northbound lane , rode up a guardrail and struck one of the overpass support columns causing the vehicle to flip onto its side , trapping her in the vehicle . Suffolk County Police , ESU , and Yaphank Fire Department units responded to the scene . Together , firefighters and ESU officers used the “ Jaws of Life ” to cut the roof off the car to gain access to the victim , who sustained serious injuries , and package her for transport to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital . Northbound County Road 101 was closed at the overpass for a time for investigation purposes .
