Ask Aunt Angie
Welcome to Ask Aunt Angie, in which Aunt Angie answers your questions!
Dear Aunt Angie,
Word on the street says that lawn waste can no longer go in clear plastic bags. Instead, we’ re supposed to use certified compostable bags, reusable containers, or bundles with special string. Do you know how many clear trash bags I have in my garage? A lot. Why in the world did First Colony decide to—
Excuse me a moment, but Aunt Angie needs to jump in here and clarify something. While you are correct about the new requirements for green waste containers, it is the City of Sugar Land, not FCCSA, who is responsible for trash pickup. That means they make the rules about containers. OK, you may continue.
Whatever. So you’ re saying FCCSA doesn’ t care about trash collection?
Sincerely, Trash-Troubled
Dear Trash-Troubled,
Not so, my friend, not so. FCCSA does care about trash collection. For example, guidelines state that trash containers should be set out at the curb no earlier than the evening before pickup. This includes green waste containers, certified or otherwise.( Be sure to bring your cans in by 8 AM the day after pickup).
Ideas for what to do with all those clear trash bags: seasonal decoration storage, painting drop cloth, ugly rain poncho, kitchen chair protectors for spaghetti night … or you could use them for trash( regular, not lawn).
Best, Aunt Angie
Dear Aunt Angie,
The weather is finally cooling off! I think I’ d like to go boating, but I don’ t want to buy a boat. Any ideas?
Sincerely, Boat Buff
Dear Boat Buff,
Good news! The Oyster Creek boathouse is open Saturday and Sunday through the end of October. First Colony residents age 21 and older can check out a kayak for free. Non-residents may rent them for a small fee. See the FCCSA website for hours and more details. Another option is to build your own raft out of cardboard boxes, duct tape, and lots of clear plastic bags. If you need some, I suggest you contact Trash- Troubled.
Best, Aunt Angie
