Plant of the Month: Salvia

Are you looking for a low care plant that blooms most of the year, is pest resistant, drought tolerant, attracts butterflies and hummingbirds, and requires little fertilizer, then Salvia is the plant for you?
August Landscaping Tips
• Water slowly and deeply once or twice per week, depending on rainfall.
• Watch out for chinch bug damage. The best treatment is preventative. Don’ t forget to water your lawn and make sure that it has been fertilized. If you do have chinch bugs, use a liquid insecticide that is specifically for chinch bugs.
There are over 700 varieties that provide color from spring to frost. They perform best in well-drained soil and most prefer full sun, except for those broad leaf varieties, which do better with some protection from the hot afternoon sun. They come in different sizes from a dwarf to those that can grow to five feet. They are also available in all shades of red, pink, purple and blue. Some varieties are annuals, some perennials, and some are considered shrubs.
They will look good planted in mass planting, borders, containers and as accent plants. Remove bloom spikes after they have faded to encourage re-blooming.
• A light pruning of roses can be beneficial.
• It’ s time to plant your fall vegetable crops including tomatoes, peppers, green beans, cucumbers and summer squash.
