Also hundreds of years ago, when Vikings invaded Scotland, they were slowed by patches of wild thistle, allowing the Scots time to escape. Because of this, the wild thistle was named Scotland’s national flower. We have a lot going on at the Club now that we are in the swing of things. With construction work and projects on the course we are trying our best to communicate what is happening and how it affects Mike Veile the grounds. There are construction restraints that we will continue to Grounds Superintendent work on as it becomes available to us. On the golf course we are getting to the warmer part of the season and you will notice that we will be spraying chemicals more frequently for diseases and fertility. Also the cultural practices like topdressing, verticutting, needle tinning and hand watering will be more evident throughout the next few months. We have built up a small thatch layer due to high sodium levels in the water and high magenese levels. The result is the PH in the soil is rising. We are working very hard to allow the soil profile to breathe by doing these cultural practices which in turn will help in the fight against disease. When you mow at such a low height, roll multiple days in a row and spray growth regulators you have to relieve the compaction for better water penetration and oxygen movement. We will and always will continue to create a more consistent surface without much disruption, along with communication to the membership of how we can accomplish these tasks. I would like to thank the participants, along with their guests, for a fun and competitive atmosphere during Member Guest. The golf course was in great shape and truly showcased the facilities to your guests. Congratulations to Mac Danford for taking the title this year and it will always be remembered as you come down #16 where we planted the first Cottonwood Invitational tree for the winners. As always if you have any questions or comments feel free to email me at [email protected] or you can call me at (970) 214-5533.
