ALDO SCRIBANTE RACEWAY A Proud Legacy of Eastern Cape Motorsport
For more than five decades, Aldo Scribante Raceway has been at the heart of motorsport in Port Elizabeth / Gqeberha. It has been home to racing enthusiasts, talented drivers, and generations of competitors who have thrilled fans with their speed, skill, and determination.
The circuit ' s story began long before the roar of engines first echoed across its tarmac. The Algoa Motor Sport Club spent approximately 14 years raising funds to establish a permanent racing facility for the region. With support from local motor manufacturers, including Ford and General Motors, and crucial financial assistance from renowned motorsport patron and construction businessman Aldo Scribante, the club ' s dream finally became a reality.
Construction began in the 1970s, with the circuit officially opening on 30 November 1974. The opening weekend drew an impressive crowd of about 12,000 spectators eager to witness the start of a new chapter in Eastern Cape motorsport. The opening programme featured both motorcycle and car racing, with local rider Tiny Marriner claiming the distinction of winning the first race aboard a Honda 750.
Named in honour of Aldo Scribante, whose passion for racing extended to supporting some of South Africa ' s finest drivers, the circuit quickly established itself as an important venue on the national racing calendar. Scribante was renowned for his involvement with Scuderia Scribante and his support for multiple South African champions, including Dave Charlton.
Over the years, the circuit has hosted a wide variety of racing categories, from production cars and touring cars to single-seaters, superbikes and endurance machines. Its relatively compact layout, measuring approximately 2.48 kilometres, demands precision, bravery, and consistency, challenging experienced racers and newcomers alike.
The circuit has also played a significant role in developing local talent, helping drivers establish themselves in South African motorsport. Generations of competitors have tested their abilities on its corners, while passionate spectators have gathered trackside to experience the excitement, drama and unmistakable sound of racing.
Today, Aldo Scribante Raceway remains the home of the Algoa Motor Sport Club and a treasured part of the Eastern Cape ' s sporting heritage. More than just a racetrack, it represents decades of dedication, community spirit and a shared love of motorsport.
From its humble beginnings to today ' s racing spectacle, Aldo Scribante Raceway keeps the spirit of Eastern Cape motorsport alive, with a celebrated history and a future still being written, one lap at a time.
