Africa has developed several iconic motorsport homologation road cars. Many are now prized by global collectors. Some will be in the Classic Car class, joined by iconic‘ youngtimer’ road cars.
CEMZA Ford Sierra XR8
One of the most iconic South African production-car-based racers will be present at the FAW Trucks Eastern Cape Time Attack. Silvio Scribante will be campaigning a true race-spec Ford Sierra XR8.
Dubbed ' the Animal ' during its 1980s racing era and made famous by the outrageous but effective driving style of South African racing legend Willie Hepburn, the XR8 is globally renowned. It was by far the most outrageous Ford circuit racing homologation car of its time.
Ford engineers wanted to make their mark in the highly competitive South African Group One Touring Car Championship, racing against other iconic domestic homologation specialists like the BMW 745i and Alfa Romeo GTV6 3.0.
Powered by a small-block Windsor 5-litre V8, the XR8 had a distinctive soundtrack, especially when driven in anger, with skillfully abundant throttle use. Beyond its sound signature, it also had that iconic hatchback bi-plane spoiler. Not quite a 911 ducktail, but close enough to make it memorable. Especially on what was designed to be a large family hatchback.
Efficiency Motorsports Nissan Skyline R32
The 1990s were a peak era for Japanese automotive engineering and racing. No model symbolises that more than Nissan ' s ' Godzilla '.
Craig Czank ' s meticulously prepared Efficiency Motorsports Nissan R32 Skyline is exactly what crowds come to experience. Nissan ' s R32 is the legendary Japanese supercar killer that was never available in South Africa. And it has an even more mythical reputation because of that.
Of all the GT-R generations, the R32 is perhaps the most renowned. This version dominated Australian saloon racing, including the treacherous Bathurst 1000, in the early 1990s. It proved that Japanese engine and drivetrain engineers had the measure of their American, Australian, and European counterparts. Craig ' s R32 is an immaculate example of everything a ' youngtimer ' Skyline should represent, without being a trailer queen.
