B & B , recommended to us by a Wing rider in Whitehorse , turned out to be one of our favorite overnight accommodations of the trip . Even the worst aren ' t cheap .
Fairbanks is an oasis in a primitive land . Never mind that temperatures range from the high 90s in summer to -60 degrees in winter . The Chena River flows through town on its way to supply the mighty Yukon River farther north , and during the summer months the river teems with paddle boats , ski boats , personal watercraft and kayaks . Pike ' s Landing , noted for its halibut and salmon fare , is also significant for its sprawling deck overlooking the river . We could have been in the south of France .
The temperature was 93 degrees when we arrived at Trail ' s End , the BMW dealer in Fairbanks . Scooter-of-the-long-beard was in the process of merging the new enterprise with his Harley-Davidson dealership , called The Outpost . He had kindly stocked Continental
The Hotspot : outdoor dining along the Haul Road , just north of the Yukon River , with admonitions about how to avoid becoming a meal for the local grizzlies .
