Watson Lake is the apparent vortex of signs scrounged from all over the world and exhibited over several acres of lightly wooded hillocks . It also attracts a significant collection of adventure riders staging for or returning from missions in Alaska , who are overflowing with information , advice and admonitions regarding the road ahead , like " Beware of the highway patrol in the Yukon ," and " Road conditions suck , especially if it ' s raining ."
Tired of back-to-back 400-500 mile days over rough roads , we welcomed the short ride to Whitehorse and a nocturnal respite at the Best Western downtown . Whitehorse , with a population of 24,000 , feels cosmopolitan by territory standards , sporting a shopping mall , upscale bars and restaurants , all with in walking distance of the hotel .
