A pair of " jay-walking " mountain goats , a moose that refused to yield the road and frequent road con struction projects with long waits for pilot cars without acceler ator pedals slowed our progress . Five mph is way too slow for bikes negotiating ploughed-up sections of pavement and deep gravel berms . A red-haired flag person , wearing a ball cap with flashing LEDs , mitigated mosquito attacks at one site by marching around us waving her battery-powered tennis racquet / mosquito zapper .
