Main Street in Hyder , Alaska : No cops , no government officials , no taxes and the locals wouldn ' t have it any other way .
Mountains on the Canadian side and Misty Fjords National Monument on the American side . Hyder and its inhabitants symbolize the Alaskan spirit . No roads are paved , no taxes are levied , no police patrol , no government infringes nor does it offer typical benefits . The snow reaches second-floor levels in winter and Hyderites love it .
That night we supped on fresh halibut and salmon at The Bus . The owner , chef and waitperson arrived in Hyder driving a school bus , parked it and turned it into a restaurant . There is outside seating under umbrellas streetside and a small lean-to behind the bus for inside dining and , presumably , no health inspectors .
Returning to Canada , we retraced our route through the towering mountains split by " blue ice " glaciers flowing like rivers , and reengaged the Cassiar en route to Watson Lake , Yukon Territory .
