epicrides
Otherworldly
Although they ’ re located just 62 miles off the coast of northern Africa , the Canary Islands are an autonomous community of Spain . Volcanic in origin , there are seven main islands , the largest of which is Tenerife . At the center of Tenerife is Teide National Park , a UNESCO World Heritage Site that surrounds Mount Teide , a 12,198-foot peak that is the third tallest volcano in the world , rising 24,606 feet above the sea floor . Several challenging , high-elevation roads wind their way through the national park , with long stretches that cut through the vast lava beds surrounding the active volcano . Jagged rocks lining the road leave little margin for error , but the views — especially on a clear day when the other islands are visible off in the distance — are truly epic .
