special report:

Die verlorene Ehre der Katharina Blum oder: Wie Gewalt entstehen und wohin sie führen kann

1976

It is extremely rare for me to come across a movie that I can not follow. I have friends who come to me in an effort to explain movies with complicated and twisted plots. I don't know if I just found this film by Volker Schlöndorff and Margarethe von Trotta boring or if it was actually hard to grasp, however I desperately wanted to turn it off and watch something more fun.

The film follows Katharina (Angela Winkler) who meets Ludwig Gotten (Jurgen Prochnow) at a party and falls in love with him. He comes to her home and stays the night. The next morning she is awoken to police entering her home with forcce and accusing her of harboring a terrorist. The film shows how she is stripped of her dignity and reputation at the hands of THE PAPER which has been compared to the real life tabloid Bild-Zeitung, a paper made infamous for posting falseties and gross exagerations.

While the above facts were easy to catch I began to lose small details in the film that I feel could have easily been made more clear. In the beginning it takes quite some time to figure out who is the terrorist as well as if the police are monitoring the party or if there are just many terrorists present.
