Traditional Irish dress during the early days was inspired by the Gaelic and Norse costumes. Women wore short tunics with fringed cloaks. Lace collars became extremely popular. Women also wore long dresses made from wool cloth, usually decorated with ribbons and other accessories.

In present times, Irish step dancers are the best example to witness traditional Irish clothing. In the early 1800s, female dancers wore ordinary peasant dresses often embellished with ribbons formed with flowers or crosses. The crimson homespun skirt reached till the ankles worn with a simple black bodice. Now, the costumes are shorter and more elaborate.
