DAY 2 Hanoi
On arrival transfer to your hotel . Later , a guided city tour includes the Temple of Literature , One Pillar Pagoda , Quan Thanh Temple and Hoan Kiem Lake .
DAY 3 Hanoi
At leisure to get out and discover the city . Alternatively , a selection of optional guided tours are available ( additional expense ), including a trip to Hoa Lu , an old Vietnamese capital brimming with temples ; a half day railways walk to glimpse local life ; a vespa tour to experience Vietnam as the locals do ( see page 136 ).
DAY 4 Hanoi / Halong Bay
Depart by road to Halong Bay and this afternoon board a wooden sailing junk for an overnight cruise around the UNESCO World Heritage Listed Halong Bay , a truly stunning bay and sure to be a highlight of your tour .
DAY 5 Halong Bay / Hue
Soak up the enchanting vistas this morning before you disembark and are driven to Hanoi . En route visit Phu Lang ceramic village where you can stroll , watch the skilled potters at work and meet the locals . Fly to Hue and on arrival transfer to your hotel .
DAY 6 Hue
At leisure in Hue , Vietnam ’ s former imperial capital . You may wish to relax by the hotel pool or perhaps head out and see what the city has to offer . There are also several optional guided sightseeing tours available ( additional expense ), including a vespa tour , combined boat and road tour to Thien Mu and Minh Mang Tomb or you can visit the home of a city resident for a hosted lunch . This afternoon , set off on a guided city tour which will include Hue Citadel and the Hue Royal Antiquities Museum
DAY 7 Hue / Hoi An
Morning departure by car to Hoi An via Hai Van Pass . On arrival in Hoi An take an afternoon guided walking tour of this ancient trading town .
DAY 8 Hoi An
Full day at leisure . If you ’ re happy to explore under your own steam there ’ s lots to see . Once a major port , Hoi An boasts grand architecture and a beguiling riverside setting with merchant houses and temples . Optional excursions ( additional expense ) include historic My Son which dates back to the 3rd century ; a cycle ride through the stunning rural scenes of Kim Bong Village ; or a half day Vietnamese cooking class .
DAY 9 Hoi An / Ho Chi Minh City
Free time before you depart by car to Danang Airport and fly onwards to Ho Chi Minh City . On arrival you will be transferred to your hotel and can relax or head out to explore . This evening , why not book a fun-filled vespa tour ( extra expense ).
DAY 10 Ho Chi Minh City
The day is yours to sightsee independently . If you prefer , optional tours can be booked ( additional expense ) and include a day trip to discover the Mekong Delta ’ s splendour ; a half day excursion to the nearby Cu Chi Tunnels ( see page 136 ), the impressive underground network built by the Vietnamese army ; a fascinating cooking class or a half day guided city tour .
DAY 11 Ho Chi Minh City
Time for last minute sightseeing or shopping before you are transferred to the airport for your onward journey .
