DAY 1 Fly to Hanoi
DAY 2 Hanoi
On arrival transfer to your hotel, the rest of the day is at leisure. Why not book an optional evening Vespa Tour( see page 136)?
DAY 3 Hanoi
Begin with a walk along Hanoi’ s back streets for a glimpse of city life before a short train ride over the Red River. This afternoon, visit Ho Chi Minh’ s former residence, the One Pillar Pagoda, Temple of Literature and the Lake of Restored Sword. A cyclo tour of the Old Quarter is a relaxing way to end the day and includes a stop at an ancient Vietnamese“ long house”. This evening, look forward to a water puppet show.
DAY 4 Hanoi A full day at leisure for you to explore as you wish.
DAY 5 Hanoi / Halong Bay
Drive to Halong Bay( approx 2½ hours drive) and board a wooden sailing junk for a cruise among the hundreds of islets of Halong Bay.
DAY 6 Halong Bay / Hue
Continue cruising through Halong Bay before disembarking at noon and transferring by road to Hanoi airport for a flight to Hue. On arrival, you can relax or explore independently.
DAY 7 Hue
Today’ s full day tour includes Thien Mu Pagoda and ancient Royal Citadel. This afternoon visit the tombs of Emperor Khai Dinh and Emperor Tu Duc.
DAY 8 Hue / Hoi An
Drive to Hoi An( approx 3½ hours drive) stopping in Danang enroute to visit the Cham Museum and Marble Mountain. Arrive Hoi An late afternoon.
DAY 9 Hoi An
Visit a family-run lantern making business where you design and make your own before a walking tour of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Highlights include ancient merchants’ houses, the Phuc Kien Assembly Hall, the 400-year-old Japanese Covered Bridge and the vibrant riverside market.
DAY 10 Hoi An / Can Tho
At leisure before a flight from Danang to Can Tho. This afternoon visit a Khmer pagoda, the Can Tho Museum and enjoy a walk to Gian Gua pilgrimage site.
DAY 11 Can Tho / Mekong Delta
Embark on your cruise aboard the Bassac riverboat. Cruise to Cho Lach passing numerous laden river barges. After lunch on board, stop for brief walking tours of the villages lining the river. Dock at Tra On with an overnight stay on board.
DAY 12 Mekong Delta / Ho Chi Minh City
An early morning cruise takes you to the bustling floating market at Cai Rang. Disembark at Can Tho and explore the local market before driving to Ho Chi Minh City( approx 2½ hours drive).
DAY 13 Ho Chi Minh City
Visit the Cu Chi Tunnels( approx 1½ hours drive), an amazing labyrinth of narrow passages used by the Vietnamese army as living quarters, hospitals and escape routes. You have an option to join a guide to explore a short stretch of the tunnels. This afternoon return to Ho Chi Minh City and visit the Reunification Palace, Notre Dame Cathedral, the Central Post Office, Chinatown, the Quan Am Pagoda and the Binh Tay Market.
DAY 14 Ho Chi Minh City
Full day at leisure. Coffee lovers may wish to take a morning tour of the Vietnam Barista School and visit the famous Vot Cafe, where locals enjoy their coffee( at extra expense).
DAY 15 Ho Chi Minh City
Transfer to the airport for your onward journey, or alternatively extend your holiday?
Alternatively, after day 10, consider time by the beach in Hoi An or Quy Nhon? See pages 144-145 & 149. Or, before flying home, add on a beach resort in Ho Tram( see page 146) or Mui Ne( see page 148).
