JEAN DE LA GUILLONNIÈRE
Galorama : What is your background , and how is the family transition unfolding ?
Jean de la Guillonnière : I started my career in finance and wealth management . After a few months , I felt stuck and questioned my purpose . I called my parents and told them I wanted to work with them at the stud farm . To gain experience , I worked at Haras du Buff , Yorton Farm , Haras du Lieu des Champs , and Ballylinch Stud . The transition went smoothly . I took over my father ’ s shares in November 2021 and my mother ’ s shares in July 2024 . I am now leading Haras de La Rousselière .
G : What inspires you most about your parents ’ or family ’ s achievements ?
JG : They built a brand and reputation from modest beginnings . Through hard work , partnerships , and careful selection , they created a stable , viable structure . I want to carry on their work by ensuring the stud farm ’ s sustainability while maintaining the cherished family aspect .
G : One quality and one flaw you inherited from your parents ?
JG : The main lesson they passed on is loyalty . We ’ ve worked with breeders and trainers for years , allowing continuity and progress in our efforts . On the downside , I tend to get too emotionally attached to the families we have at the stud farm . It ’ s hard to move away from certain bloodlines , but I understand the importance of diversifying .
G : How do you balance tradition and innovation ?
JG : We are always open to innovation . We ’ ve experimented with new techniques , like vermicompost , and prioritize using natural products . We also use horse management software , which simplifies daily operations . Additionally , we ’ ve rejuvenated our team with younger members . However , tradition is crucial — it ’ s our history ! Loyalty to our clients remains a cornerstone , regardless of how many horses they have with us .
G : What would be your ideal pairing in 2025 within your breeding program ?
JG : Combining our strong AQPS lineage with our mare Théramène , with Karaktar or Cokoriko .
G : What is your dream ?
JG : Winning the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris or the Prix La Haye Jousselin , with a preference for the former .
G : Do you have a favorite quote that guides you daily ?
JG : Always “ think positive ,” even in tough times .
G : What is your outlook on the breeding market and its key challenges for 2025 ? What is the role for young people ?
JG : The market is highly selective . If a mare is black-type and has produced black-type offspring , she ’ ll sell well . But even the slightest gap in the pedigree can be a dealbreaker . It ’ s important to ensure there ’ s room for everyone . Breeding should always leave space for dreams . The PMU and betting systems have regained some dynamism . While we focus a lot on owners , bettors are essential too — it ’ s important to encourage betting .
Young people have a promising role , and I ’ m part of the Young People ’ s Commission established by the President of France Galop . We come from diverse backgrounds but share a common motivation .
G : How do you address ecological challenges as a breeder ?
JG : Ecology is a shared responsibility , especially as we are located in a floodprone area with strict regulations . We avoid pesticides , both out of conviction and due to regulations . We have a wind-powered water system that collects and regulates water usage efficiently . We consume only what we need — no more .
G : What foreign initiative has impressed you the most ?
JG : Meeting David Futter ( Yorton Farm ) was a highlight . He often said , “ Work well but enjoy yourself too ,” which left a lasting impression .
G : What technological tools do you use daily ?
JG : WhatsApp is probably the app I use most to provide regular updates to clients . Other tools like Groomy and EasyFoal are integral to our management system .
