Should Highschooler’ s take Music Classes?
How does it affect studies?
Learning music has significantly improved my focus and memorization skills, which I use in my daily life. Beginning to learn music starts with understanding the notes. Memorizing these notes is essential, as they are the foundation for playing an instrument. It took me some time to adapt to it, but with consistent practice, I eventually got the hang of it. I now use this memorization technique when studying for tests or trying to memorize information. My brain has adapted to the repetitive practice, which has positively impacted my overall study habits.
Is taking music class helpful for the future?
At this age, students are usually still trying to find their passion in what they like to do. SLAS’ s policy of requiring middle school students to take mandatory music classes helps. I got used to music class, which is why I’ m taking it in high school. During time in middle school towards high school, students explore different activities and may find their passion.

After finishing middle school, students often struggle to decide whether to take a music class. Music is more than just playing notes; it fosters creativity in academic subjects. It improves focus and stimulates the brain, providing an advantage in higher-level thinking. Learning music helps develop a creative part of the brain that is often used. Not only does it enhance creativity, but it also supports emotional needs. Music can serve as a way to relax and escape into another dimension, leading to lasting positive experiences. When I transitioned from middle school to high school, the first question that came to mind was,“ Will music class benefit me in the future?” I realized how much I enjoyed music class and thought that it could be a valuable option to explore if my first class choice didn’ t work out. I highly encourage taking a music class in high school. It can feel like a break from subjects like English, math, or science, allowing students to engage themselves in melodies and learn about music.
After playing music for three years in middle school, you kind of get hooked on it. You spend a lot of time learning about musical structure and what music truly is. Personally, it has become my second passion. While I have a first-hand passion that I want to pursue, taking music classes serves as a backup option if my first choice doesn’ t work out. Learning and doing something you like is much easier than doing something that disinterests you. 9th grade is the first year of high school and has a hugely different environment than middle school. Taking a music class can be beneficial in this case because you can save a whole class from stress and pressure. My first class is music, and it’ s a great way to start your day instead of starting it with geometry. When it comes to exam season, it’ s pretty chill because I get to study for my other subjects in the meantime after the music exam.
