MWIS / CDABP TRAININGS
Olayiwola and Lowery also addressed the importance of“ take-off,” which is the process of identifying and quantifying all materials, labor, and other resources needed for a construction project. It is derived from project plans and drawings and used to estimate a project’ s cost accurately.
They pointed out that take-off is the foundation of all estimates, that the estimate is only as good as the take-off, and that if take-off is wrong, the estimate will be wrong.
“ We are now in the digital age of doing take-offs,” said Lowery.“ Today’ s software will calculate your take-offs, your square foots, your counts, and your areas. And now AI is starting to do your takeoffs for you – it is becoming a norm in the construction industry. AI can do your schedules for you and write subcontract agreements.”
As the presenters described, some of the estimating and scheduling tools available to contractors include Excel, RS Means, Bluebeam, OnScreen Takeoff, PlanGrid, Fieldwire, Procore, P6, and Project.

Certified Payroll & Labor Compliance Webinar
On June 10 and 11, 2025, MWIS hosted a two-day webinar on certified payroll and labor regulations. Certified payroll and labor regulations are crucial aspects of construction contracting, ensuring adherence to labor laws and fair compensation practices for workers.
The goal of the training was to provide contractors with the necessary best practices to obtain and maintain detailed records for each worker, documenting their hours worked, wages paid, fringe benefits provided and any deductions made. Labor compliance extends beyond payroll records to encompass broader regulatory requirements concerning worker classification, safety standards, and equal employment opportunities.
Contractors were connected to resources available through the California Department of Industrial Relations( DIR) and public agency reporting portals, with directions provided on how to access and navigate these tools.
The event’ s presenter was Veronica Avila, principal of Labor Compliance Enterprise, Inc. Founded in 2009, the company assists companies with services surrounding the rapidly changing prevailing wage labor law environment.
Understanding the certified payroll and labor compliance requirements is essential for contractors to meet regulatory requirements and uphold ethical standards that benefit both the contractors’ business and their workforce. By guiding contractors through the essential practices and common challenges, the workshop highlighted the importance of ensuring their construction projects are compliant with local, state, and federal labor laws.
