SPECIAL SECTION- DIFFERENTIATION

Figure 1

A leaf can come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Growing from the plant stem, leaves typically have a flat green surface called the leaf blade. The blade contains a network of veins that support the leaf and transport water and minerals to and from the rest of the plant. The leaf blade absorbs sunlight to make the sugar a plant needs to grow. This process is called Photosynthesis.  It is the method a plant uses to make its own food. A leaf can be simple or compound. A simple leaf, like an apple leaf, has a single, undivided blade. A compound leaf is divided into two or more parts called leaflets. A four-leaf-clover is an example of a compound leaf.

The Flower

Plants have flowers that come in many sizes, colors and shapes. Flowers begin as buds at the top of a stem. When ready, the bud opens and the flower blooms. Many plant flowers are colorful and sweet smelling. In time, the flower will drop its petals and become a fruit. The fruit holds the seeds that make new plants.
