There are many different types of stems, ranging from soft green stems to hard tree trunks. Many smaller plants have soft, nonwoody stems. Their outer covering is a thin layer of protective tissue. Woody stems like tree trunks and branches are stiff and strong. Their outer layer is covered by dead bark.
