It raises the leaves toward sunlight so they can make food, which is then transported by the stem to the rest of the plant. Stems also transport water and nutrients up from the roots. There are many different types of stems, ranging from soft green stems to hard tree trunks. Many smaller plants have soft, nonwoody stems. Their outer covering is a thin layer of protective tissue. Woody stems like tree trunks and branches are stiff and strong. Their outer layer is covered by dead bark.
