Star Hoopers and Awards
Ella Marchesani is a starting junior this year on the SBHS Girls Basketball Team. She received First Team All-League for her tremendous efforts this past season. She was known this season for her shooting skills, steals, as well as encouragement shown while being injured for six games. Even while having a break in the season, she scored about half of the total points the team acquired this season. Ella scored 415 points this season which immensely aided the team in having a successful season. These were made from 89 two-pointers, 49 three-pointers, and 90 free throws. She has almost reached her goal of being a part of the 1,000 point club with a total of 878 points since her freshman year. Ella’s best games include an away game against Lodi and a home game against Wood-Ridge with a total of 33 points each game.
Deanna Occhipinti is one of our graduating seniors this year who was recognized and received Second Team All-League. She held the center together with the other post players, Gabby Gusciora and Prisha Patel. Deanna was recognized for her skills in assisting the guards, her own skills in the paint, and unmistakenly drawing fouls to gain extra points on the scoreboard. She ended her high school career with a total of 518 points. This season she had a total of 36 two-pointers, 2 three-pointers, and 29 free throws which added to 112 points in total. Deanna’s best game was against Paterson Charter with a total of 12 points.
Saoirse Twomey is a starting sophomore guard on the girl’s varsity team. For her extensive help in aiding the team during the entirety of the season, she was recognized as Honorable Mention in the All-League selections. Saoirse was one of the point guards, along with Ella Marchesani, who was also the second-highest leading scorer. At the end of the season, she had a total of 156 points, with 39 two-pointers, 18 three-pointers, and 14 free throws. Saoirse’s best game was against St. Mary (Ruth.) with 16 points total.
Season Overview
The Saddle Brook Girls Basketball team is growing into a program with high numbers. In this season the team had a sum of 28 players ranging from freshman to seniors. In our interview with Joe Colombo, he had guaranteed the remaining other Falcons at SBHS for an even more successful season next year. With the significant amount of underclassmen stepping up to the positions that need filling, we will be looking forward to what the next season will bring to us!
