A recurring trend in today’s entertainment is video games turning into movies or television shows. Some examples of this are, Sonic the Hedgehog, The Last of Us, and Detective Pikachu. However, there are some bad ones as well. For example, the 1993 movie Super Mario Bros, which scored a 15% on rotten tomatoes and a 4.0/10 on IMDB. So, what makes a good video game movie? After asking a few friends what they thought I have come to the conclusion that a good video game movie needs to stick to the game’s roots. Include the idea of the game into the movie! Also, good casting and production of the movie can do the videogame justice.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie, released in April of 2023, has received awesome reviews from audiences. It was very entertaining and included many aspects from the game. In the movie, Mario and Luigi own a failing plumbing business, and after getting insulted by their dad over how bad their business is, they end up in this fictional world with two battling societies. One led by Princess Peach and the other led by Bowser. Mario ends up in the Mushroom Kingdom led by Princess Peach and Luigi ends up in the Koopa Kingdom led by Bowser. Mario has to save Luigi by defeating Bowser.
