Entering the Field
of Pharmacy
By Charlene Brown

Faith Heart Magazine (FHM) is so excited that Charlene Brown, Staff
Pharmacist was willing to discuss what it takes for young girls or women to
enter the field of pharmacy. Here's what she had to say...
The roles of pharmacists have changed vastly over the past years. Pharmacists are entrusted to not
only dispense medicine, but to counsel and support each patient and ensure the complete and legal
accuracy of each prescription filled. Pharmacists are often seen as "easy-access" to over-the-counter
as well as prescription medicines and advice. Pharmacy is definitely a rewarding profession that
can lead to lucrative income and a full career of employment. In order to be successful, there are
some things that one should remember.
1) Absolute confidentiality is required in accordance to HIPPA; lack of confidentiality can lead to
being dismissed or fired from a position.
2) You must be willing to be held accountable for your actions as your work can be reviewed by
others and legal matters may present themselves in the case of fraud stemming from illegal
prescriptions.
3) Dependability goes a long way because retail and other medical pharmacies depend on
pharmacists to be present, timely, and committed to handling the work volume.
4) The work volume will differ based on the location and store or organization you are working for,
so it is vitally important to be supportive to the techs and other pharmacists you may work with.
5) Pharmacists must be leaders who are willing to share what they know, such as tips and
processes, to support the operation effectively.
Entering into the profession of pharmacy is a goal many strive for, but it is not an easy task.
Through prayers, hard-work, and determination, you can accomplish such a goal. I was born and
raised in rural SC on a farm, but becoming a pharmacist was a dream that I made my reality. After
gruesome years of farm-living and working to clean hotels and condominiums, I knew I wanted a
better way of life. Sometimes you may face setbacks and disappointments, but brush yourself off
and stay in the fight. Remember that “the race is not for the swift neither the strong but to those
who endure to the end.” God didn't say "No" to your dreams and goals; He just may have said, "Not
Yet". Sometimes you may even have to go through a pit to get to paradise, but keep going for the
blessing is in the pressing. Some of you may have other tasks/ cares of life such as current jobs,
heavy school schedules, children, marriage, sickness, or other things that are hindering you from
your goals, but be encouraged and "Reach beyond the break and hold on." Just believe. I'm a firm
believer that "God can do exceedingly, abundantly, above all you can ask or think."
