Student Access for Improved Learning( SAIL)
The Student Access for Improved Learning( SAIL) Office at Eastern Florida State College promotes equal access and opportunity for students with documented disabilities. SAIL works collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and administration to reduce barriers and create an accessible learning environment. Through an interactive accommodation process, SAIL determines reasonable accommodations that provide students equal access to programs, services, and educational opportunities based on appropriate documentation. Faculty do not determine accommodations; all accommodation decisions are made through the SAIL Office. SAIL also encourages students to develop self-advocacy skills, engage proactively in their education, and utilize the resources available to support their success.
Services and Resources
The SAIL Office serves as a resource and collaborative partner to faculty and departments across EFSC. Staff are available to provide consultation, answer questions regarding accommodations, offer classroom accessibility guidance, and participate in department meetings or trainings as requested.
Guidelines for EFSC Faculty
• Accommodation Process: Students seeking accommodations must complete the SAIL registration process, which includes an application, disability documentation, an intake interview, and an interactive review process. If approved, students participate in a Welcome Meeting to review accommodations, responsibilities, and available resources.
• Faculty Responsibility: Once accommodations are approved, EFSC is responsible for ensuring that approved accommodations are implemented.
• Purpose of Accommodations: Academic accommodations are intended to provide equal access to programs, services, and learning experiences while allowing students to demonstrate their abilities without disability-related barriers.
• Teacher Notification Forms: Faculty are notified and verify receipt of approved accommodations through the SAIL Teacher Notification Process. Students send this notification to each instructor through their myEFSC Portal each semester— it serves as the official notice of approved accommodations and must be received before accommodations can be implemented. Students are encouraged, but not required, to also discuss their accommodations directly with instructors so expectations are clear. • Syllabus Statement: Faculty are encouraged to include the approved SAIL syllabus statement in every course syllabus and review it with students at the beginning of each term to ensure all students are aware of available accessibility and disability support services.
• Confidentiality: Information regarding a student ' s disability and approved accommodations should be treated as confidential and discussed only with appropriate college personnel who have a legitimate educational need to know.
