Service-Learning & Civic Engagement
As we enter our 39th year, the Center for Service-Learning & Civic Engagement( CSLCE) is delighted to continue empowering students, faculty, and community partner organizations by creating and supporting partnerships that provide service opportunities and encourage active citizenship. To enhance the larger mission of EFSC, we coordinate these connections to increase learning, improve career readiness, foster civic responsibility, and meet community needs. Students can document volunteering with approved organizations to enhance their transcript and resume, improve their GPA, earn college credit hours, and attain awards and scholarships.
Faculty may offer service-learning opportunities as an optional or required course component and / or as an elective one-credit supplemental 4th / 5th credit option field studies course( XXX- 2948). Because the CSLCE partners with hundreds of nonprofit and government organizations, faculty can tailor their service-learning experiences to meet the specific academic goals of their discipline. If desired, faculty can request the creation of service-learning field studies courses through CSLCE staff. As in the past, the service-learning field studies courses appear as cancelled until they open for student registration on the first day of classes. Students can now self-register for these courses during drop / add period( except dual-enrolled students must register through their DE advisor), and then registration can be completed through CSLCE staff until the extended deadlines set by the Registrar. To help students learn about service-learning and volunteer opportunities, the CSLCE hosts Care Fair events on all four campuses each September and February.
Working with the EFSC Civic Literacy Committee, the CSLCE also helps oversee successful preparation and completion of the Florida Civic Literacy Exam for student graduation, supports voter education, and facilitates a variety of opportunities for students to participate synchronously in political discussions and civil debates that inform civic decision making.
