For behold, darkness shall cover the earth and thick darkness the peoples; but the Lord will arise upon you, and His glory will be seen upon you. But what does love look like to the young man locked behind bars in shame and anger? To the woman on drugs, desperate for anything that will silence the pain of life? The prophecy of Isaiah promises that into this darkness a great light will shine. A star blazed forth where there was no star before, and the Prince of Peace was born into a world at war; a world imperfect in every way. But the imperfection did not stop Him from coming. In His wild pursuit of mankind, He stepped down from the highest and descended to ludicrous depths of self-humiliation to live amongst us, to show us the way back to Him. Yet, as He stood before those who nailed Him to the cross, they could not see Him for who He is. And they rejected Him. He still comes to us in ways we can turn Him down – in the hungry we do not have to feed, the lonely we do not have to comfort, and the desperate we are free to turn our backs on. So much of our loving them has to do with seeing them. So much of our belief in all He has come to be – Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6) – comes from seeing Him. 3
