Biscuit decorating for Valentine’s Day By: Kathryn Beaney This is an adaptable activity where you can either use bought packet biscuits, make biscuits using a packet mix or use a recipe with raw ingredients. Your choice may depend on the age of the children you work with and group size, but is an activity that can be enjoyed by all. Young children can be creative and use their fine motor skills as they decorate their biscuit. They can learn about colour and shape as they talk about what they are doing. Older children can learn about change through cooking the biscuits and observing how the icing sugar changes as you add water and food colouring. It is also a good opportunity to support mathematical understanding. Resources may include: Biscuits Icing Food colouring Piping bags Sprinkles Small sweets Plastic butter knives for spreading Paper plate and covering Ensure that the resources are set out so that they can be accessed by all of the children.
