Eyes on Early Years Volume 12 | Page 15

By: Ailsa Gordon ! This January while on holiday in Fuerteventura I drove a Segway for the first time. This was something I’d never thought about doing before until I saw some other tourists thoroughly enjoying the experience on the beach in El Cotillo, Fuerteventura. A Segway is a two-wheeled electric vehicle which is used by many as a convenient way to travel around. It is a self-balancing device which uses gyroscopes to remain upright and is controlled by the direction in which the rider leans as they apply pressure to 2 foot pads. Riders lean backwards, forwards and push left and right using a thin handlebar attached to a pole to move in the desired direction. It has a top speed of around 12.5 mph and is a very fun and green way to travel! It was a little challenging at first to master the controls but after 10 minutes of practicing on the smooth pavements I was ready to hit the beach and bumpy off-road tracks! The experience took concentration and confidence and was extremely enjoyable and lots of fun. I would really recommend that everyone tries something new this year. Open yourself up to new experiences and opportunities and explore what is available around you. I have mastered a new skill and activity which I will definitely do again. I wish you all a very Happy New Year filled with many new and exciting experiences!
